Introduction

The Malawi Haps Cichlid Albino Blue Dolphin (2″ to 2.5″) is a juvenile cichlid known for its unique albino coloration and the iconic “dolphin-like” hump on its head, which becomes more pronounced as it matures. This species originates from Lake Malawi in Africa and is a variant of the Blue Dolphin Cichlid (Cyrtocara moorii).

Appearance: At 2″ to 2.5″, the Albino Blue Dolphin displays a pale, almost translucent body with a distinctive cream-white or light pink coloration due to the absence of melanin, which defines its albino traits. Its eyes are typically reddish, a common characteristic in albino fish. The shape of the fish is streamlined, with a noticeable rounded head and a developing nuchal hump, giving it a resemblance to a dolphin. As the fish grows, this hump becomes more pronounced.Fins are typically long and flowing, with subtle hints of yellow or pinkish tints in the albino form.

Behavior: These fish are generally peaceful compared to other African cichlids, but they can be territorial, especially as they grow. At this young size, they are active swimmers and will explore the tank, often showing curiosity. They are social creatures and tend to thrive in groups, though care must be taken to manage aggression as they establish a hierarchy.

Size: A minimum tank size of 250 litres is recommended for juveniles, though as they grow, larger tanks re ideal to accommodate their eventual size (up to 8-10 inches in adulthood).

Water Conditions: The ideal water temperature for the Albino Blue Dolphin is between 74-82F (23-28C), with a pH level of 7.5 to 8.5, replicating the alkaline conditions of Lake Malawi.

Dcor: Provide ample swimming space along with rocky areas and caves for shelter. A sandy substrate is recommended, and the tank should have good filtration to maintain clean water.

Diet: At this juvenile stage, the Albino Blue Dolphin will do well on a varied diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, flakes, and occasional live or frozen foods like brine shrimp or bloodworms. A balanced diet will enhance its color and growth.

Compatibility: Malawi Haps are relatively peaceful compared to other African cichlids, making them suitable tank mates for other similarly sized cichlids, especially non-aggressive species. Avoid housing them with overly aggressive species, and ensure that any tank mates are large enough not to be bullied.
