At Aquatic Arts, we are dedicated to the world of freshwater invertebrates, and our passion for shrimp breeding has led us to offer some of the most unique and stunning species available. One of our latest achievements is the successful in-house breeding of the Snow Zebra Sulawesi Shrimp (Caridina sp.). This strikingly beautiful shrimp, native to the pristine waters of Sulawesi, is now available tank-raised and thriving under our expert care.
Unique Coloration: With its icy blue and white tones, this shrimp resembles a miniature work of art, standing out in any aquarium setup.
Sulawesi Native: Originating from the famous freshwater lakes of Sulawesi, Indonesia, this species thrives in stable, warm water conditions with a mineral-rich environment.
Bred for Success: Our tank-bred Snow Zebra Sulawesi Shrimp are adapted to aquarium life, making them more resilient and easier to care for compared to wild-caught specimens.
Active and Fascinating: These shrimp are constantly foraging, grazing on biofilm, and displaying intriguing social behaviors. Unlike many other Sulawesi shrimp, they are not shy and will actively swim around the tank.
The Snow Zebra Sulawesi Shrimp originates from Lake Towuti and other ancient lakes of Sulawesi, known for their crystal-clear waters, unique biodiversity, and mineral-rich substrates. To mimic their natural habitat, we recommend:
Temperature: 78 – 86F (25 – 30C)
pH: 7.5 – 8.5
KH: 3 – 8
TDS: 150 – 250
Minimum Tank Size: 10 gallons (recommended colony setup for best results)
Filtration & Flow: A sponge filter or gentle flow to maintain pristine water conditions
Lighting: Moderate to high, as Sulawesi shrimp are accustomed to well-lit environments
Substrate & Hardscape: Fine sand, smooth stones, and mineral-rich materials to encourage biofilm growth
To ensure the most stable water parameters, we condition our breeding tanks with Salty Shrimp Sulawesi 7.5 remineralizer, which creates the optimal environment not only for Snow Zebra Shrimp but also for other Sulawesi shrimp species in our program.
Snow Zebra Sulawesi Shrimp are omnivorous and require a well-balanced diet to maintain their vibrant coloration and health. Their diet should include:
Aquatic Arts Algae Wafers
Bacter AE a micro-powdered food supplement rich in probiotics and beneficial bacteria. It supports biofilm development and improves digestion and survival rates in shrimp colonies.
Biofilm & Algae (an essential part of their natural diet)
Blanched Vegetables (such as cucumber and zucchini)
Protein Supplements (like freeze-dried or frozen brine shrimp and daphnia, fed occasionally)
Indian Almond Leaves or Botanicals (to enhance their environment and provide supplemental nutrition)
The Snow Zebra Sulawesi Shrimp thrives in a species-only or Sulawesi-themed setup. These shrimp are best kept in a dedicated tank with:
Other Sulawesi Shrimp Species (e.g., Cardinal Shrimp, White Orchid Shrimp)
Sulawesi Snails (Rabbit Snails, Tylomelania species)
Weve observed a surprising synergy between Snow Zebra Shrimp and Rabbit Snails. While we can’t fully explain why, tanks with these peaceful snails consistently yield healthier, more active shrimp behavior and better breeding success.
No Aggressive Fish (Most traditional aquarium fish, even nano species, are not ideal tank mates)
One of the biggest advantages of our in-house breeding program is that our Snow Zebra Sulawesi Shrimp are already acclimated to aquarium conditions, making them more likely to breed successfully for hobbyists. Key factors for breeding success include:
Keeping a healthy colony with a good male-to-female ratio
Providing stable, high-quality water conditions with minimal fluctuations
Using Salty Shrimp Sulawesi 7.5 remineralizer to maintain ideal parameters
Feeding a varied and mineral-rich diet, including Bacter AE and fresh vegetables
Offering hiding spots and fine substrates for egg-laying and molting security
Maintaining a consistent temperature is crucialtemperature fluctuations can significantly slow the breeding process
Including piles of rocks and natural hardscape to promote biofilm growth and provide safe spaces for molting shrimp
Unlike wild-caught shrimp, which can be delicate and difficult to transition into aquariums, our Bred by Aquatic Arts Snow Zebra Sulawesi Shrimp are already adjusted to tank life. This means:
They have a higher survival rate and adaptability
They are more likely to breed in home aquariums
They are ethically and sustainably sourced, reducing pressure on wild populations
Diet: Omnivorous grazer; supplement with shrimp-safe foods.
Social Behavior: Peaceful and social; thrives in groups.
